- Mokhtar Ghambou, AMI President

Arab Heroes in the Time of the Holocaust

AMI & National Press Club, Washington DC, December 14, 2006

AMI brought together André Azoulay, Counselor to HM the King of Morocco, and Robert Satloff, the Executive Director of the Washington Institute for Near Eastern Policy, in a unique panel to discuss the Holocaust in the Arab/Moroccan context. Mr Satloff drew on his new book, Among the Righteous, to demonstrate how the Jews were treated in North Africa and the Arab world during and after the Holocaust. Mr. Azoulay discussed King Mohammed V’s heroic efforts to protect Moroccan Jews from the repressive anti-Semitic policies of the French Vichy colonial government. By referencing the Holocaust, both speakers shed light on a historically shared experience which can serve as a political platform for consolidating Jewish-Muslim relations in the future. The panel was moderated by renowned journalist Bernard Kalb.
